Network Troubleshooting

Below you will find some basic, as well as some more advanced, troubleshooting steps which can be used to help with connection and network issues, such as lag.

Basic Troubleshooting:

1. Move your router closer to the device you are using to play Islands of Insight. Depending on how far away your router is, it may be more difficult for it to create a connection with your device.

2. If you are using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection as this is typically more stable.

3. Perform a speed test via Speedtest.net to ensure that your internet meets the requirements to properly launch and play Islands of Insight.

4. Close all other applications when launching Islands of Insight to free up resources.

5. Attempt to run Islands of Insight as an Administrator, as well as trying to launch it directly from your platform's library, and not through a desktop or taskbar shortcut.

6. Contact your ISP to verify whether you are getting the correct upload/download speeds.

Advanced Troubleshooting:

1. Ensure that Windows, Islands of Insight, your drivers and your platform/console are up to date

To check for Windows updates, on your computer select: Start Settings > Windows Update Check for updates.

  • For more information about checking driver updates click here.

2. Perform a hard reset on your router. To do so:

  • Shut down any computers or devices connected to the modem/router.
  • Unplug the modem and router from their power outlets.
  • Wait at least 15 seconds.
  • Plug the modem back into the power outlet first, wait 1-2 minutes, then power on the router.

3. Reset your internet connection via flushing your DNS. To do so:

  • Press Windows Key + R to bring up "Run".
  • Type "cmd" (without quotes) and hit enter to bring up "Command Prompt".
    • First, type "ipconfig /release" (without quotes) and hit enter.
    • Second, type "ipconfig /renew" (without quotes) and hit enter.
    • Lastly, type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without quotes) and hit enter.
  • Restart your computer.

4. Change your NAT type to 1 (Open) - more information about how to do this can be found here.

5. Ensure that Islands of Insight isn't being blocked by your Windows firewall. If you are on a shared network (such as university Wi-Fi) it's possible their firewall may be blocking your connection.
